After a largely attended public meeting, and a list
of volunteers coming forward, Individual meetings took place on
a one to one basis until 3 suitable Beaver leaders where found to
assist Karen Finnegan running the Beaver section. We had a dedicated
core of Beaver leaders ready to go, Marie McMullan, Therese Gregory
& Carmel Farrell.
Notices went into local newspapers, shops, schools and local radio,
informing the community we were starting Beavers, 2nd March 2007
from 6.30pm - 7.45pm in Carlingford.
Carlingford was chosen because the group draws it
membership from the villages of Omeath and Carlingford (one parish)
and from the greater Cooley area. Location Location Location soon
became Venue Venue Venue, and we chose the Parish hall, "St
Michael's", in Carlingford.
The colony settled at 25 Beavers, and then Phase
2 took place .Cubs!
Quickly, one of the Beaver Leaders was identified
as a potential Cub Leader and upon being approached she accepted
the role and signed on the dotted line. We decided to run with the
Beavers all summer and then open up Cubs in the Autumn. Mighty craic
was to be had and articles made there way into the local newspapers.
Entitled FUN FUN FUN, Scouts Play Safe, Scouts go Hunting.
To round off the Scouting year, we finished with
the inaugural Beaver & Leader investiture in St Laurence's Church.
In attendance were all the children, parents, family and friends
along with Scouters from the county. County Commissioner Yvonne
Lawrence, Newly appointed Provinical commissioner Jimmy Cunningham,
and Former Chief Scout, Peter Dixon who also deputised for the then
Chief Scout, Martin Burbridge. A terrific investiture and party
took place afterwards. Peter was helped by the Beavers to cut the
celebratory cake which had been decorated with the recently passed
Scouting Ireland emblem.
